A secret encounter in the Southern Philippines...
Dumaguete is a tranquil town lying on the coast of Negros Island. The area has long been famed for the Dauin Marine Sanctuary where the word on everyone’s tongue is critters. Dumaguete is also fortunate enough to be within a 45min to 1.5hr boat ride from many beautiful islands, including Apo Island, Siquijor and Sumilon. Just off the mainland of Cebu, close to Sumilon Island, is the region of Oslob – this unassuming place is currently the talk of the Philippines, with fishermen hand-feeding whale sharks!
The Whale Sharks of Oslob, similar to those of Cendrawasih Bay in Indonesia, exhibit a unique relationship with the local fishermen. This relationship has, however, only recently come to light in the outside world and of course it is causing quite a stir. When you first arrive at Oslob you will see the fishermen on their small wooden banca boats and if you look more closely you will likely see a tail fin or two. At this point you realise it is true and that you are indeed about to have a very close and extremely intimate encounter with one or more likely five or six whale sharks. Most people snorkel with the whale sharks and they will literally pass within inches of you again and again. There is no need to swim after them, just wait in the right position and let them come to you. We spent a couple of hours in the water with them and only came out because we were exhausted from the excitement!
In Dumaguete we work closely with Atlantis Resort. Atlantis is situated on the beach, in a great settling with sublime views to the ocean. The resort has an amazing reputation for its service and hospitality, and also has beautiful bedrooms, a huge camera room and one of the best critter dives sites as a house reef. Atlantis runs regular trip to see the Whale Sharks at Oslob, combined with wall diving at Sumilon Island. At Atlantis's local dive sites we were impressed to find Flamboyant Cuttlefish, Painted Frogfish, an assortment of ghost pipefish, orangutan crab, hairy squat lobster, mantis shrimp, lots of different nudibranchs, stargazer and our definite highlight - Marbled Shrimps!
Our special price for a 10 night stay at Atlantis Dumaguete resort is £1,450 per person or for a 7 night stay £1,025 per person. All prices include up to 5 dives per day. Please contact us to book a trip or for further details. By phone 0161 442 7703 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org
