Philipppines' Participation at the British Birdwatching Fair

The Philippines' first-ever participation at the recently concluded British Birdwatching Fair in Oakham was a tremendous success, as reported by the members of the delegation in attendance to the fair.

Among the major stories of the country's participation are

•The 24-square meter stand was manned by birdwatching and wildlife conservation experts from the Philippines. The stand was touted by many as having the most attractive design. The booth won 2nd place award as the best looking tourism stand in the fair

•Seminars were conducted by Lisa Marie Paguntalan on the conservation efforts on behalf of the Cebu Flowerpecker, Dennis Salvador on the Philippine Eagle and Nicky Icarangal on Birdwatching sites of the country

•There were daily performances by the Banda Kawayan who never failed to captivate the audience on every occasion

•The much awaited “Birdwatching in the Philippines” Volume 2 Guidebook was distributed along with Volumes 1 and other information materials and gift items

•There was a raffle draw held with Birdwatching magazine with a luxury trip for 2 to the Philippines as the grand prize

•Various publicity and advertising materials in cooperation with birdwatching publications were featured during the show

•The fair also showcased Philippine bird tour packages in cooperation with UK tour operators

9th Philippine Travel Exchange

It's full steam ahead for the upcoming Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX) on 2-3 September at the SMX Convention Centre. PHITEX is the premiere business to business oriented travel fair in the Philippines which provides a unique venue for buyers from all over the world to meet with Philippine sellers.

There are currently over 200 buyers worldwide, with a great majority coming from Europe, meeting with top business suppliers in the Philippines, including hotels, resorts, tour operators and airlines. They will have the opportunity to meet with their counterparts from local Philippine sellers during the trade show.

After their meetings, buyers will get a chance to experience the amazing attractions that the country has to offer as they embark on specialized post-tours around the islands.

PDOT London will be accompanying around 35 tour operators from its various source markets, including the UK, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, Greece and Turkey.

RASA ISLAND, Palawan

Rasa Island is a notable birdwatching site in Palawan known for its success and continuing struggle in bird conservation. The Philippine Cockatoo, which used to be fairly common in most parts of the country has seen its population significantly reduced due to habitat degradation and the uncontrolled pet trade.

But in 1998, the local government of Narra and the Katala Foundation embarked on a significant program designed to help save the remaining cockatoos in the area. The project also enabled the protection of the entire Rasa Island from further degradation and conservation of other bird species that count, among others, the Mantanani Scops Owl and the Blue-headed Racquet-tail.
