Cebu & Clark to gain more Int'l flights

More tourists are set to descend into Central Luzon and Visayas as Hong Kong Airlines, China Southern, Cathay Pacific and Philippine Airlines start operations to expand their flight schedules to the Philippines.

Starting April 20, Hong Kong Airlines will have daily flights between Hong Kong and the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Clark; meanwhile China Southern, Cathay Pacific and Philippines are set to open more flights to Cebu.

Hong Kong Airlines is offering round trip tickets to and from Hong Kong for only US$20 (excluding surcharges and only available on a limited basis). The cost includes food, refillable drinks on board and even offers free shuttle services for Metro Manila residents who want to take less expensive flights here.

"People in Central Luzon love to travel and Hong Kong has always been a favorite destination," said Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) president Jose Victor Luciano. He noted that the launching of the daily Hong Kong Airlines flights would benefit some 20 million people in Central and Northern Luzon "who now have an easy and affordable gateway to Hong Kong."

China Southern will launch its Shanghai-Cebu flights flying three times weekly starting this May. Cathay Pacific will also increase its United Kingdom-Hong Kong-Cebu flights by four times a week, bringing more tourists not only from Hong Kong but from Europe as well. Philippine Airlines will also start its Osaka-Cebu flights within the year.

The Department of Tourism said that Shanghai, which is the second biggest outbound market in China, will be a "very promising" market for Cebu since tourists from Shanghai are one of the "most cosmopolitan."
