Banaue Rice Terraces

Dubbed, the "Eighth Wonder of the World," the 2,000-year-old Banaue Rice Terraces was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 citing it a living monumental landscape.

The terraces manifest the engineering skill and ingenuity of the sturdy Ifugao people, who with bare hands carved this stair-like monument out of the Cordillera mountainside. The Ifugao people developed an entire system of cultural, environmental and engineering practices to grow rice, the staple food of the nation.

Ecologists rank the terraces among the best soil and water conservation structures built by human communities. Up to this day, the Ifugaos continue the same practices of their forefathers in order to maintain the terraces.
