WOW Philippines E-Newsletter - March 2008

This month Philippines Department of Tourism (PDOT) London moves into high gear, aggressively participating in presitigous trade shows slated across Europe. The DIVE Philippines campaign is once again boldly represented in the EUDI in Rome and the London International Dive Show at Excel. Both shows have a number of promotional activities planned, along with numerous packages ready for distribution during the events. This will immediately be followed by travel marts, trade shows and cultural presentations rapidly held across Scandinavia for the post-ITB Sales Mission. Check out details of our programs below.

The continuous implementation of promotional activities and participation of PDOT to all these prestigious events ensure that Philippines tourism is an aggressive and endearing force in the global tourism market.

Friends Philippines

The well-attended Friends Philippines dinner at the House of Lords last 22nd of February was a resounding success and underscored the growing interest of supporters in the UK in fostering closer relations by increasing the number of tourists to the Philippines.

The dinner was graced by esteemed members of parliament, Friends Philippines members, Philippine Embassy representatives, patrons of the Royal Academy of Arts, media representatives, Overseas Women's Club, BSAC, PATA UK and successful captains of the industry. Guests were blessed by the allure of the historic setting along with the camaraderie of the group during the evening.

The event was capped by inspirational speeches from Paul Dimond, Chairman of Friends Philippines, Mark Pritchard, Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Philippines, Lord McNally, Chairman of the Liberal Democrats, and Philippine Ambassador Edgardo Espiritu highlighting insights on the growing mutual relationship between the Philippines and the United Kingdom.

Post-ITB Scandinavian Sales Mission


To further boost the record arrivals from Sweden, Norway and Denmark, PDOT London will conduct numerous travel marts and cultural shows in the region. Scandinavia posted the highest figures in Philippine tourism last year with increases of 21.2%, 18.7% and 23.6% in Sweden, Norway and Denmark respectively. PDOT London is expanding the coverage of this year's Post-ITB Sales Mission by featuring the world-renowned Bayanihan Folk Dance Company to provide various cultural entertainment such as Singkil, Tinikling and T'boli among others.

The travel marts will also provide cocktail receptions to leading tourism and business industry members with the presense of top Philippine-based travel specialists with the likes of Annset Holidays, Baron Travel Corporation, Dos Palmas Island Resort and Spa, El Nido Resorts, Eskaya Beach Resort and Spa , Intas Destination Management, Rajah Tours, Sampaguita Dive Resort and T.R.I.P.S. Travel spearheading the event. The cultural performances will kick start in Oslo (10 March) at the Konserthus with an additional performance for a Norwegian television. The roadshow will then move on to Stockholm (11-12 March) for numerous performances at various prestigious venues like Konferens Sparvagnshallarna, the Dansmuseet and the Nybrokajen Concert Hall before moving to Gothenburg (13-14 March) for TUR. For the first time, the Philippines will showcase the Bayanihan at the biggest Swedish tourism fair -TUR. The show will then proceed to Copenhagen (15 March) at the Bella Centre with two performances before finally going back to Gothenburg (16 March) for performances at Nordstan Mall and the Philippine stand No AO2:30 TUR.

Dive Philippines

The Philippines' participation at this year's London International Dive Show (LIDS) at Excel will be the biggest ever. With an unprecedented 50 square meter space, is the largest since PDOT first participated at the LIDS occupying nine square meters four years ago. Being also centrally located and having the best possible design with graphics hanging from the rafters of the hall, the Philippines is all set for maximum exposure during the show on 8th and 9th of March.

In addition, there will be tons of promotional activities, events planned for the Dive Show. There will be a raffle competition in the stand to draw in the crowds during the show by giving them a chance to win the ultimate diving trip for two to the Philippines. Next, the renewal of our ongoing partnership with BSAC, will be one of the prime objectives as we sign in our 3rd year agreement with the organization. We will also have the full support of a new PR company Tala PR to pave way for more Philippine dive media release across the United Kingdom.

Apo Island


The island offers the best diving around. On the southeast, the sanctuary is a gradual slope with a shallow wall. Thousands of tiny fish cluster around the bushes of black corals in crevices, and there are lapu-lapus, surgeons, some beautiful stony corals, and a collection of various species of clownfishes and anemones. Apo island is accessible by a 35-minute boat ride from Zamboanguita.

Apo Island Beach Resort, formerly Kan-Upe Cove Resort, is an internationally acclaimed dive site. The 12-hectare island has eight regular and honeymoon cottages. Located in Dauin, it has a hilly terrain and white-pebbled lagoon. Nestled within, the Balwarte Rocks and Negros Oriental Marine Conservation Park, with its spectacular coral gardens and marvelous marine life, are consistent crowd drawers.

Regal Dive

The dive sites of the Philippines are home to some of the best and most diverse marine eco-systems in South East Asia. Scientists believe that this area is where the most of the Pacific's marine organisms evolved before they spread out to colonise other oceans. There are over 500 species of hard and soft corals and innumerable varieties of fish and large pelagics. The diversity is astounding and caters to all levels of dive enthusiast.

Regal Dive's programme in the Philippines is very flexible, with so many islands to choose from, they have narrowed down the search and suggested some of the best diving island destinations including, Apo Reef in Dumaguete, Malapascua, Palawan, Puerto Galera and Alona Beach. How you choose to spend your visit to this delightful country is entirely up to you.

Record arrivals from UK and Europe in 2007, more DOT projects set for 2008


A record number of tourists from the United Kingdom visited the Philippines in 2007, with arrivals from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Ireland and Spain registering the highest figures in the entire history of Philippine tourism, reports Tourism Attach??? Domingo Enerio III, head of the Philippine DOT office in London.
Overall, tourist arrivals in the Philippines for 2007 rose 8.7 percent from the previous year to a record 3.09 million, as the country positions itself to become a major travel destination in Asia.

Close to 80,000 tourists visited the Philippines from the UK, while arrivals from the Nordic countries breached the 40,000-barrier for the first time. Both figures exceeded earlier expectations and raised hopes for another banner year in 2008.
