Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX) 2008
Highly Successful PHITEX 2008
Held at the SMX Convention Centre last 10-11 September 2008, PHITEX 2008 drew the participation of 187 foreign buyers and 166 local sellers of tourism packages. Buyers who attended the event operate in France, Austria, Czech Republic, Spain, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Russia, Australia, Hong Kong, India, Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Canada and the United States.
The PHITEX is the country's premiere business to business travel fair where buyers from all over the world meet with local counterparts to establish lasting partnerships that would foster significant growth to Philippines tourism.
In particular, the buyers from the United Kingdom, many of which were first-time visitors to the Philippines, were treated to an extensive post-PHITEX tour covering the islands of Palawan, Cebu, Bohol and Boracay. They were able to experience first-hand the varied attractions, accommodations, cuisine and the warm hospitality that the country has to offer.
The Philippines garnered the golden award for excellence of quality and innovation for its pavilion in the Expo Zaragoza in Spain. The Philippine pavilion, named ?ó?é¼?£Filipinas, Archipelago el Mundo Acuatico?ó?é¼?£, was recognized for the design and relevance of its link with the overall theme of the exposition: Water and Sustainable Development.
More than 100 countries participated in the Expo Zaragoza which attracted six million visitors, making it the year?ó?é¼?äós most important exhibition. "The three-month Expo was also a very successful tourism exchange for the country with almost 8,000 guests visiting our pavilion daily," said Domingo Ramon Enerio, Tourism Attach?â?? for London and Deputy Commissioner General of the Philippine delegation.
Highlights of the event included a travel exchange featuring several of Spain's top travel wholesalers, raffle draws awarding trips to the Philippines?ó?é¼?äó top destinations, meeting of the official mascots of the Expo, Fluvi and Filippo as well as series of marketing events dubbed ?ó?é¼?ôFilipinas Te Esperra Nights,?ó?é¼?¥ where top travel agents and operators were invited among others.
Pulong ng Bayan 2008
The Philippine Embassy in Oslo hosted the third Pulong ng Bayan in Scandinavia last August and also participated for the first time in the annual three-day MELA Cultural Festival of Oslo City.
The Pulong ng Bayan, the second to be held in Oslo and which sported the theme ?ó?é¼?ôMigration, Peace and Development?ó?é¼?¥, was attended by over 50 leaders and members of various Filipino Community Groups in Norway and Denmark.
Guest speakers included Ambassador Antonio Polosa of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Oslo; Ms. Astrid Helle Ajamay, Project Coordinator of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry on Migration and Development and coincidentally, Norway?ó?é¼?äós focal person for the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) which is going to be held in Manila this October; Ms. Felominita Mongaya H?â??gsholm, Editor of ?ó?é¼?ôEn de Olde Worlde: Views of Filipino Migrants in Europe;?ó?é¼?¥ Ms. Mary Borromeo-Hedfors, Trade Attach?â?? based in Stockholm; and Ms. Chit Afuang, Public Relations Officer of DOT-London.
Featured Destination of the Month
Located about three hours south of Manila via bus and ferry transfer, Puerto Galera is Oriental Mindoro's chief asset as it is blessed with one of the world's most beautiful natural harbors.
Puerto Galera is world-famous for its splendid beaches, coral reefs teeming with marine life and and exquisite dive sites for new and experienced divers. The region was declared a Marine Reserve by the United Nations in 1974, owing to its abundance of exotic fish species seldom seen elsewhere. Diving is possible all year round with over two dozen prime sites in the area.
Aside from being an underwater paradise, Puerto Galera is also the perfect gateway to some of the most unspoilt territories and national parks in the vast island of Mindoro.
GO Dive Philippines
The Corals and Coconuts Tour serves as the "starter pack" of GO Dive Philippines. It is consistently popular for first-time divers to the country and for those who are just looking for a relaxing but fun exotic dive trip.
The tour covers 15 days, departing on a Saturday and returning on a Sunday. It is available anytime, for either individuals or groups and suited to both divers & non-divers. The package costs from as little as ?é?ú1600 (all-inclusive) depending on numbers & dates and includes 26 dives. An entire week is spent in each of two resorts: one in Anilao (about 2 hours from Manila) and the other in Puerto Galera (a 1 hour ferry ride away). For many of us, after a great day?ó?é¼?äós diving, a trip to Happy Hour in the exotic Point Cocktail Bar overlooking Sabang Beach is a memory to be cherished. Many a birthday, wedding anniversary or first sighting of a pygmy seahorse has been celebrated here in style. The final night is spent in a hotel in Manila with opportunities for shopping & for tourism.
