WOW Philippines E-Newsletter - February 2009

Europe is a continent of fairs, and for the first quarter of 2009, DOT London has been busy preparing and implementing the country's participation in numerous travel trade and consumer shows in all its target markets.

Being present in these events allows people from all across Europe to know more about the Philippines, for inclusion in their shortlist of destinations they may decide to visit this year. In these shows, DOT London showcases new tour packages and novel holiday inspirations to the Philippines. In the case of trade events, there is an opportunity for our private sector partners to meet up and conduct business with counterpart European tour operators and travel agents.

Reiseliv (Lillestrom, Norway; 8 - 11 January 2009)

Reiseliv is Norway's largest travel event, attracting almost 40,000 travel trade practitioners, media representatives and consumers from all parts of the country.

DOT London spearheaded the Philippines' participation in this event, in close cooperation with the Philippine Embassy in Oslo and Norway-based private sector partners. Participation was in the form of an 18 square meter space which provided information materials to clients. The booth also served as a meeting point for tour operators, travel agents and media wanting to know more about the Philippines.

Feedback from this year's show reflects the increasing popularity of the Philippines among Norwegians, which posted the strongest growth among Scandinavian countries in 2008. Arrivals from Norway are expected to increase in 2009 despite the global economic crisis. It is predicted that Norway will again lead all markets in Scandinavia in actual arrival numbers and growth rate to the Philippines.

MATKA (Helsinki, Finland; 15 - 18 January 2009)

Already Implemented


The Nordic Travel Fair MATKA is the biggest travel industry event in Northern Europe and the Baltic region. This year, the event gathered around 85,000 visitors, including 16,000 travel trade practitioners.

At MATKA, DOT London highlighted eco-tourism through its Adventure Philippines and Diving Campaigns. Being in Finland for the first time in so many years, the Philippines was warmly received by the Finnish market looking for new adventure and holiday destinations in Asia.

With the possible entry of Finnair into the Philippines, Finland promises high-end markets formerly untapped by our tourism sector. More opportunities will arise as DOT London negotiates the visit of the PATA Finland study group sometime this year.

Holiday & Travel Show (Manchester, UK; 16 - 18 January 2009)

The Holiday & Travel Show in Manchester is on its 17th season this 2009, with DOT London participating for the fifth straight year.

Manchester is England's primary air hub in the Midlands and is a major source of international traffic from the UK. DOT London is cognizant of its importance and is fast to take advantage of the opportunity to promote in this area. Participation in the show is doubly rewarding since the Philippines was the only Southeast Asian destination on offer.

The Manchester event provides DOT London with a platform to reach out to markets outside the British capital. While London undoubtedly has the biggest concentration of the British travelling population, cities like Manchester have their fair share of international travellers that may be coaxed to visiting the Philippines.

Holiday World (Dublin, Ireland; 23 - 25 January 2009)

The annual Holiday World is Ireland's only Travel and Tourism Show, open to both travel trade practitioners and the general public. The Show is now celebrating its 20th year and garnered an attendance of over 50,000 Irish holidaymakers.

Astonishingly, the highest frequency of holiday inquiries from the Irish market involved luxury honeymoon destinations in the Philippines. Irish honeymooners were interested in seeking trips that were over two weeks, covering multiple Philippine destinations while staying the most lavish accommodations available.

Feedback from the travel trade was equally encouraging. Travel agents who previously only sold flights to the country are now keen to branch out to hotels and resort bookings as well. Tour operators were also enthusiastic to start offering Philippine luxury packages after being evident in the demand for quality and high-end holidays to the country.

FITUR (Madrid, Spain; 28 January - 1 February 2009)

The Philippines made its comeback in FITUR this year and greatly succeeded in creating a massive impact with the Spanish travel trade, media and the travelling public. With over 100 meetings with travel trade and media partners in the first three (business) days of the event, the show proved to be one of the most productive activities that DOT London has organized thus far. And in the last two (consumer) days of the show, the crowds were treated to unparalleled performances by the world renown Bayanihan Dance Company.

FITUR is Spain's largest tourism trade fair and the world's third largest. With more than 13,000 exhibiting companies from 170 countries/regions, FITUR had the largest representation of supply thus allowing more than 150,000 sector professionals to establish significant networks of business and institutional contacts.

FITUR was another vital opportunity for DOT London to identify new trade partners and attract distributors in the Iberian region. DOT London was also be able to enlighten travel trade practioners on upcoming Philippine destinations and the campaign strategies to market them.

El Corte Ingles In-Store Promotions (Madrid, Spain; 02 - 10 February 2009)

Immediately after FITUR, DOT London has teamed up with Spain's largest department store chain El Corte Ingles to showcase the cultural prowess of the country through a series of in-store performances by the world-renowned Bayanihan Folk Dance Company.

In close cooperation with the Philippine Embassy in Madrid, the Bayanihan has been tapped to provide cultural entertainment to the large flocks of Spanish shoppers that are expected to visit the popular commercial centre.

DOT London has ensured the value of this promotion to tourism by providing Philippine information brochures, campaign related DVDs and destination flyers during the promotional event.

Destinations (Earls Court, London, UK; 05 - 08 February 2009)

DOT London is bringing the Philippines marketing campaign to one of the largest annual travel consumer shows in the UK - Destinations in February 2009.

Visitors will be able to choose their Philippine holidays from among the many holiday packages on offer - from beach, safari, city break, career breaks, adventure travel to eco-friendly tourism.

Destinations is an essential event for the British traveller looking for inspiration and a venue to book their next holiday trip abroad. Among the partners carrying Philippine tour programs and participating in Destination this year are Audley Travel, Dive Worldwide, Sanya Travel and Silverbird, to name a few.

BIT (Milan, Italy; 19 - 22 February 2009)

Open to Private Sector Participation


The Borsa Internazionale del Turismo (BIT) is Italy's largest tourism fair, attracting an average of 155,000 visitors every year, 20,500 of which coming from outside Italy. A record number of exhibiting countries are set to join BIT this year, one of which will be the Philippines after a long absence.

Tour operators participating under the Philippines booth will be capitalizing on BIT's two business-to-business days to establish invaluable trade partnerships. The event beomes a consumer show during the last two weekend days.

Participation in BIT comes on the heels of an aggressive push for the Italian market, marked by the appointment of a PR and Marketing Agency, Milan-based Interface Tourism Italy.

EUDI (Rome, Italy; 27 February - 02 March 2009)

Following the success of its initial participation last year, DOT London will once again attend the European Dive Show (EUDI), reputedly Europe???s largest travel fair dedicated entirely to underwater sports.

This year, a co-marketing agreement is being finalized with one of the leading names in scuba diving. Once the details are set, the cooperation can extend to after the EUDI Show, where dive groups can be organized on holiday incentive programs to the Philippines.

EUDI has a successful track record of having over 100,000 visitors attending last year. Already in its 16th year, this fair will also be held in conjunction with the Boat Show and the Gommoshow.

Salon dela Cornella de Llobregat (Llobregat, Spain; 13 - 15 March 2009)

The biggest date for diving in Spain returns to Fira de Cornell?? in March. For three days the most well known brands in the sector will present the latest in equipment and the finest dive destinations known to the sport.

DOT London will be presenting the best of Philippine Diving at the Fira de Cornell?? for the first time this year. To mark the occassion, prominent dive journalists and photographers are planned to give talks on their recent dive trip to the country. Javier Nart and Miguel Mercadal of "Trotamundos" and "A Toda Costa" fame will be showcasing their coverage of a seven-day dive trip to Palawan, Bohol and Dumaguete. The two journalists will share their experiences and promote the Philippines as one of the greatest destinations for diving.

TUR (Gothenburg, Sweden; 19 - 22 March 2009)

Scandinavia???s leading travel and tourism trade fair is continually proving to be essential for creating business partnerships in the region with over 90 exhibiting countries already signed up for the event.

This year's focus at TUR is on business and conferences, which is strategically in-line with the expanding Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Expositions (MICE) market for the Philippines. There is a rising demand for convention and business travel services to the Philippines. The country???s strength lies in its ability to offer various activities, attractions and destinations, along with the proficient local travel trade.

Participating Philippine-based tour operators to TUR are well placed to offer their packages and handle the lucrative Scandinavian corporate market who have a tendency to stay long and spend more.

London International Dive Show (London, UK; 28 - 29 March 2009)

The Philippines will once more uphold its reputation as a top dive paradise in the upcoming London International Dive Show (LIDS). The growing popularity of the country as a prime dive destination is evident as most divers coming to the show each year are already aware of the popular dive sites and attractions in the Philippines and are coming back to discover new locales.

There is an ongoing upward trend which sees the number of dive operators featuring Philippine packages increase over the recent years. Prominent operators such as Dive Tours, Dive Worldwide, Explorers, Go Dive Philippines, Regal Dive, Scuba Travel and more are currently expanding their product range on the coutry in their 2009 packages.

Diving in Bohol

Bohol diving is a celestial experience. It boasts of an underwater panorama of impressive coral gardens teeming with colourful marine life. Noted for their deep, steep walls, Bohol's unique dive sites were created by the continental shifts during prehistoric times. Diving is close to most resorts, which means you do not have to travel far from the dive shop to the actual dive site.

The majority of Bohol diving is concentrated around the south west end of the Bohol mainland. The islands of Panglao, Balicasag, Pamilacan and Cabilao are all synonymous to excellent diving year-round.
